Apartment Three
Private Residence | New York, New York | Complete
Located on 14th Street in Manhattan, Apartment Three is an 800 square foot apartment located in a 200-unit building constructed in 1965. The goal of the renovation was to produce an open, white, light, and airy space, a considerable challenge given the existing conditions of the apartment: a small kitchen, many awkward and undefined spaces, a narrow corridor cordoning off the bathroom and master bedroom, and outdated fixtures, electrical, plumbing throughout. To achieve openness, we demolished the kitchen wall in favor of a kitchen island, integrating the kitchen and dining space. The apartment’s bulky and irregular closet spaces were made to seem smaller through subtle door and millwork details which also helped to bring these storage spaces into fluid alignment with other elements in the unit. New custom, dimmable, trough lighting was installed, creating a lighting scheme able to adjust to the time of day and desired ambiance. Finally, by wrapping the existing structural column in a mirrored surface, the apartment becomes dynamic and playful, its dimensions seemingly enlarged through the production of multiple reflected views.
