Apartment One

Private Residence | New York, NY | Complete

Featured in Remodelista.

Apartment One is a 450 square feet apartment renovation located in the back unit of a Pre-War townhouse in New York City. The apartment seamlessly weaves together minimal modern upgrades such as recessed lighting, and integral closet doors with the existing building elements. This integration is achieved by letting key historical elements act as the guide for the insertion of new design features.

Not only do the pre-existing materials of the apartment—the wood slats of the floor, its carrara marble fireplace and white walls—dictate the renovation’s material palette, but the Pre-War elements also determine the unit’s proportional relationships. For example, the new bookcase spacing is dictated by the height of the fireplace, while the height of the desk is determined by the existing window sill. In this way, incursions that otherwise might be seen as intrusive here feel like natural parts of a harmonized whole.
