LOCATION: Los Cabos, Mexico
TYPE: Private Residence
PROJECT TEAM: Daisy Ames, Gabriel Huerta
This residential compound is located on a site just north of Los Cabos, Mexico in an isolated cul-de-sac with oceanfront views and direct access to the beach. The house challenges typical definitions a home because four owners share the rights to four separate private suites, while sharing the a main living spaces such as the kitchen, dining room, library, and spacious living room cascading down to the pool and cabanas. This new model of collaborative living has facilitated conversations around the commodification of views, space and light, challenging the very nature of equality latent in the model of shared living.
The architectural floor plans rely on the use of overlapping geometry to mediate discussions around hierarchy and the division of views, space and light. The light wells utilize poché as a space making strategy, penetrating the floors of each level to bring dynamic light, and cast dramatic shadows throughout the house. This project was a design development collaboration between Studio Ames and Studiohuerta based in Brooklyn, New York, and San Diego, California.
